I’m always looking for new ways to grow, challenge myself, and create something that feels fresh and exciting. Recently, I decided to experiment with a new location here in Arizona — and it turned into one of my favorite sessions yet!

A figure in a flowing black dress poses gracefully on a desert trail surrounded by desert flora at sunset.

As a photographer, I’m constantly scouting new spots.

Not just the popular locations everyone uses — but places that are closer to home, convenient for my clients, and full of potential if the light hits just right.

This session wasn’t about chasing a viral backdrop.

It was about testing a location and seeing what it could become.

And wow… it delivered.

The Last-Minute Decision

As we were wrapping up the main part of the session, we saw how gorgeous the sunset was.

It wasn’t something we had planned for. No elaborate setup. No overthinking. Just a quick “Should we run over there and see what happens?”

A black dress stands out against the desert landscape at sunset with a tall saguaro cactus and yellow wildflowers.

Why I Love Leaving Room for Spontaneity

This is exactly why I don’t over-script sessions.

Yes, I plan. Yes, I scout. Yes, I prepare.

But I also leave space for creativity and instinct.

Because sometimes:

The unexpected backdrop becomes the favorite image.

The “one last shot” becomes the frame you print.

The unplanned moment becomes the most emotional one.

If we hadn’t followed the light, we would have missed some of the dreamiest sunset reflection photos I’ve ever captured.

A New Favorite Close to Home

A series of photos showing someone in a black top reaching up to pick oranges from citrus trees in a sunny grove.

One of the biggest reasons I loved this discovery? It’s closer to home.

That means:

Easier access for clients

More flexibility for sunset timing

Less driving stress

More spontaneous golden hour sessions

And after seeing what the reflections can look like when the conditions are right… this one is officially added to my list.
